John Owen

Mr. Owen has prepared and prosecuted a variety of patent, trademark and copyright cases for Coats + Bennett since 1994. His client base ranges from Fortune 500 corporations to the garage inventor, leading to a stimulating array of projects. “My clients are energized by having given birth to novel concepts,” he says, “and my job is to act as their confidante and counselor as that idea becomes reality.” In his more than ten years of practice, Mr. Owen has consistently emphasized that collaboration as he has worked to secure mechanical, electrical and biomedical patents. 

 

Mr. Owen brings business acumen, borne from his experience as an engineering manager, to bear upon his law practice. He honed this business perspective over the ten years he worked at both small, family-owned companies as well as large, multi-national corporations. “I’ve seen first-hand the significant competitive advantage that comes from a fertile and robust intellectual property program,” Mr. Owen says. As a result, he works with his clients’ commercial success in mind.

 

Mr. Owen graduated magna cum laude from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science in 1983. He then earned his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 1996. A member of the Law Review, Mr. Owen was also selected for the Order of the Coif.  As a practicing attorney, Mr. Owen was named a member of the “Legal Elite” by Business NC magazine, an honor conferred by his peers, for four years running (2006-2009).

 

His professional affiliations include being a member of the NC Bar and the patent bar. Mr. Owen is also admitted to federal practice in the Eastern District of NC.

 

His hobbies include golf, oenology, and reading.
