Justin Leonard
“At Coats + Bennett, we understand the investment our clients have already made in their ideas before they contact us. This time, effort, and commitment inspires me to work for my clients with that same intensity and dedication”

Justin Leonard stresses attention to important details within his patent law practice at Coats + Bennett. He understands that the value in a client’s innovation often hinges on an appreciation of these details because they are frequently overlooked by patent examiners in crowded technological fields. The primary areas of Mr. Leonard’s patent prosecution and strong technical background include digital systems design, telecommunications, computer and network architectures, integrated circuits, and software development.
Mr. Leonard graduated from Duke University, magna cum laude, in 2005 with both a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 2008, where he was an active leader of the Carolina Intellectual Property Law Association.
Mr. Leonard is admitted to the practice of law in the State of North Carolina, before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the Tau Beta Phi National Honor Society.
In addition to strengthening his clients’ intellectual property assets, Mr. Leonard enjoys scuba diving, cycling, and photography with his wife, Sarah.
