Kathleen Cavanagh brings to Coats + Bennett a strong background in various areas of chemistry, biology, and biotechnology. Kathleen’s practice is focused on the preparation and prosecution of patents in chemical and biological arts, biomedical devices, wastewater technologies, semiconductors, and oil recovery systems. She also has experience handling patent appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, and preparing patentability opinions.
Kathleen received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry, summa cum laude, from North Carolina State University. While studying for her degree, Kathleen researched many areas of physical chemistry with an emphasis on catalytic processes via isobutene activation and hydride transfer upon absorption onto zeolites. Kathleen received her Juris Doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Florida State University College of Law, where she earned awards in copyright law, global regulation of pharmaceuticals, land transfers, unincorporated business entities, and creditors' rights. During law school, Kathleen served as a staff editor for the Business Law Review and was selected to the Order of the Coif.
Admitted to practice law in the State of North Carolina and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Kathleen also holds memberships in the North Carolina Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Association, Wake County Bar Association, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Chemistry Fraternity.
In her free time, Kathleen enjoys teaching the 3rd grade faith formation class at her church, traveling, and spending time with her husband, Chris, and her dog, Piper.
