Dan Homiller
“Because of Coats + Bennett's size, the services we provide are more personal – jobs are not assigned to a faceless pool of patent drafters. As a former client, I appreciate this personal element.”

Daniel P. Homiller understands that intellectual property issues are fundamental to all high-technology businesses today, and that these IP issues affect innovation, business strategies, acquisition strategies and more. This understanding of the client perspective, combined with his extensive engineering background gives him a distinct edge in patent prosecution in areas of electronic devices, products and systems, as well as software systems. An inventor himself, Mr. Homiller is named on three United States patents with more than a dozen pending applications, and has particular expertise in wireless systems. He additionally has significant experience in preparing and negotiating technology-related agreements including nondisclosure, licensing and technology/software agreements. His knowledge of nearly every aspect of high-tech product development, particularly portable electronic devices, allows him to offer his clients expertise in all phases of the patent life cycle, from concept generation and evaluation, patent preparation and prosecution, to patent and technology licensing.
Beginning his career as an engineer in the defense industry where he developed advanced receivers for signal intelligence applications, Mr. Homiller has gained over 20 years of experience working with a wide range of wireless communications technologies in a variety of roles. He joined IBM in 1994 to develop wireless modems for use with their laptop computers. Starting in 1997, he spent the next 10 years at Ericsson Mobile Communications and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, working as a systems engineer, project manager, engineering manager, product manager and Deputy Chief Technology Officer. While at Sony Ericsson, he spent four years in their Legal Department where he acquired substantial experience in intellectual property licensing transactions, strategic patent portfolio development, and patent infringement litigation defense. He draws on this in-house experience with infringement allegations and patent litigation to advise clients on reducing risks posed by others' intellectual property.
Mr. Homiller earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He obtained his Master of Business Administration from Duke University Fuqua School of Business, and his Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law. His bar admissions include the State of North Carolina and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
