They tried to keep me from calling my restaurant an “Ale House.” Coats and Bennett stopped them.
Lou Moshakos

I remember sitting at the bar looking around my restaurant, my dream manifested. My Ale House. Then a restaurant in another state also with Ale House in the name tried to stop me from using the name I had chosen. All my customers knew my place by that name. I was so worried it would take away from my hard work, away from my business. Coats + Bennett went to battle for me. They saved my name, they saved my dream.

"Ed Green, with Coats + Bennett, advises the best ways to protect my work by helping me anticipate potential trademark issues, and securing my copyrights."
Mary Jane McKittrick

As an author, publisher and producer of products for children, I run into all sorts of interesting situations regarding the protection of my ideas. For instance, my Brookstone Farm series features my two dressage horses, Black Tie and Lexus, as characters. I wasn’t sure if Lexus, the car company, would allow me to use the name of my big, red horse in my stories. I didn’t want to risk a lawsuit, but I did want to use my horse’s real name. Ed assured me that because the horse was named Lexus from birth and has breed documentation, and no one was likely to confuse the character with the car, I had nothing to fear.

Ed Green helped me launch my current production company, Tuxedo Cat Productions, Inc., tackling matters large and small. He makes sure my intellectual property is protected before publication through legal agreements with my artists and consultants, and by registering copyrights on the characters and my stories. I consider him a trusted advisor and invaluable part of my business. Ed tells me I am his only client who asks for advice regarding cartoon characters!

"My designs are my livelihood. If I can’t protect them, I can’t protect my future."
William Poole
Everything I own, everything I’ve accomplished has come from my inspiration to create. When others wanted to use my designs, change them a little and use them freely, they were taking my future and taking everything I worked years to accomplish. Coats + Bennett figured out how to protect my work. They ensured my future and my livelihood.

"The competition actively sought to stop us, but they lost."
Charles Wellard

My invention was called the X-spooler. It’s a machine that spools electrical wire into a coil. It sounds simple, but at that time there was a monopoly on the process. A competing company sold the only spooling machine available in the industry for a rather hefty sum. I figured out a better way to do it. Our process was better, it was faster, it was more dense, it came off the spool easier and it wasn’t prone to some of the tangles and problems of competing technologies. Of course the competition actively sought to stop us, but they lost. Coats + Bennett successfully patented the X-Spooler for us, and as a result, we sold the X-Spooler very successfully.

That success not only significantly impacted my life and the lives of my family. It enabled me to provide opportunity for generations to come through philanthropic efforts such as helping bring about the construction of Wellard Hall at the Sandhills Community College.
