Larry L. Coats is always striving to do the highest quality work to impact favorably on his clients' businesses, and has written and prosecuted over 1000 patent applications. His 35 years of experience in all areas of intellectual property includes patent and trademark infringement litigation and patent preparation and prosecution. Serving as lead counsel in numerous patent and trademark infringement litigations, he has also drafted and negotiated patent and trademark license agreements, and has argued numerous patent cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences in the United States Patent Office. His experience extends to the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a variety of technologically diverse areas including light steel framing, medical devices, oil recovery systems and processes, packaging equipment and process for packaging. He currently manages an international water and wastewater treatment practice focusing on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications throughout the world on biological and chemical treatment, ballasted flocculation, membrane filtration, magnetic seeding and separation.

Mr. Coats obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1967, and his Juris Doctor was earned from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969. Admitted to practice law in the State of North Carolina before the North Carolina Supreme Court as well as before the Supreme Court in Pennsylvania, he is also registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association, North Carolina Bar Association, Wake County Bar Association and serves on the Advisory Board for North Carolina State University's Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department.
