John Owen's philosophy of law incorporates the belief that intellectual property provides a competitive edge for all industries. For more than ten years, he witnessed that impact first-hand as both an engineer and a manager in high technology companies. Experience also taught him that a strong partnership between attorney and client is key to maximizing this competitive edge, which is why John stresses customer service in his practice.

John graduated in 1983 from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, magna cum laude. John earned his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 1996 with honors, where he was a member of the North Carolina Law Review and selected to the Order of the Coif.

Prior to practicing law, John was a design engineer and manager in the fiber optic, telecommunications, and computer industries in Texas and North Carolina. His work focused on the design and manufacture of a variety of electro-mechanical components, including hard disk drives, computer enclosures, and cabling, as well as manufacturing management. In counseling his clients, John applies a business perspective gained from having worked at both small, family-owned companies and large, multi-national corporations.

Since joining Coats and Bennett in 1996, John has prepared and prosecuted a variety of patent, trademark and copyright cases for the firm. Licensed by the North Carolina State Bar, he has also been admitted to the practice of law before the Eastern District of North Carolina and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. John also serves as Board Member of the Triangle Intellectual Property Law Association.
