Prior to joining Coats & Bennett, Mr. Homiller acquired over 20 years of industry experience working with a wide range of wireless communications technologies in numerous roles. Mr. Homiller began his engineering career in the defense industry, developing advanced receivers for signal intelligence applications. Later, he joined IBM to develop wireless modems for use with IBM’s laptop computers. Finally, Mr. Homiller spent 10 years with Ericsson Mobile Communications and Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications in a variety of roles including systems engineer, project manager, engineering manager, product manager, and Deputy Chief Technology Officer. As a result, Mr. Homiller has extensive experience in nearly every aspect of high-tech product development, particularly with respect to portable electronics devices. He is also an experienced inventor, named on three issued U.S. patents and over twenty pending applications.

Immediately prior to joining Coats & Bennett, Mr. Homiller spent four years in Sony Ericsson’s legal department, gaining substantial experience in intellectual property licensing transactions, strategic patent portfolio development, and patent infringement litigation defense. As a result of his extensive technical background and varied legal experience, Mr. Homiller can assist clients in every phase of the patent life-cycle, from concept generation and evaluation, to patent preparation and prosecution, to patent and technology licensing. In addition, Mr. Homiller draws on his in-house experience with infringement allegations and patent litigation to advise clients on reducing the risks posed by others’ intellectual property.

Mr. Homiller earned his J.D. from Duke University School of Law, with high honors, and is a member of the Order of the Coif. Mr. Homiller also holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech, and a B.E. degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech. Mr. Homiller is a member of the North Carolina state bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
