I enjoy the legal profession and also the technical aspects of engineering. Working with patents gives me the opportunity to pursue both areas.

David Kalish is the managing member of Coats + Bennett and chairs the firm’s executive committee. He represents clients in a variety of litigation matters directed to patent, trademark, trade secret, false advertising, copyright, and other technology-driven matters. He has represented clients in a wide variety of trial and appellate courts, as well as the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Kalish has also been involved in domain name and cybersquatting disputes.

Mr. Kalish also strategizes with his clients on how to best establish and enforce their intellectual property portfolios. This includes patent and trademark filing strategies in the U.S. and foreign patent and trademark offices. He has a vast amount of experience in determining strategic advantages in timing, costs, and enforcement options. For trademarks, he also assists and advises clients on brand selection and brand management.

Mr. Kalish offers his clients expertise in patent preparation and prosecution primarily in mechanical, electromechanical and computer related arts, in addition to non-infringement, invalidity, and freedom to practice opinions. He has a wide range of experience in patent preparation and prosecution involving medical devices.

Mr. Kalish obtained his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering with a Minor in Economics from North Carolina State University. His Juris Doctor and Master of Intellectual Property were earned from Franklin Pierce Law Center.  A member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake County Bar Association, Mr. Kalish is a past council member of the North Carolina Bar Association's Intellectual Property Law Section and past editor of IP Links published by the Intellectual Property Law Section.
